Adhesion Promoter

Definition

A surface-active additive or coating used to increase bond strength between inks/adhesives and low-energy films (e.g., PE/PP).

Applications

  • Solventless laminations on PE/PP
  • Metallized film bonding

Benefits

  • Reduces delamination
  • improves ink/adhesive wet-out
  • stabilizes bond after aging/heat cycling

Industry Examples

  • Medical: improves adhesive anchorage in laminated sterile barrier pouches that undergo seal validation.
  • Industrial: increases bond integrity in chemical product overwraps exposed to oils and abrasion.
  • Electronics: improves ink and adhesive bonding on static-dissipative polyethylene films used for ESD shielding bags, preventing delamination under humidity cycling.

FAQ

Q: When do you need an adhesion promoter?

A: When printing/laminating on low-surface-energy PE or PP.

Q: Can it fix poor surface treatment?

A: It helps, but it can’t replace correct dyne level and process control.
